Do all modern compilers do tree-shaking at this point? Unless you use compiler-based flags, If you hard code them into your code, the dead code paths may still be in the shipped binary. Depending on what you are doing, the security issues mentioned in the article are still present, or you may prematurely reveal an upcoming feature.

I've been the primary tech designing, implementing and operating our systems
for the last 25 years, and new ownership came with their existing stack, and
made my position unnecessary. I'm looking for a new challenge as a trusted
partner and team member overseeing, designing, implementing technology systems,
and being an advisor figuring out the best ways to cost effectively implement
and serve web-based and other technology systems.
At another ongoing gig, I've worked independently implementing barcode driven work order tracking in a small manufacturing firm, in operation for nearly 15 years. I have the drive and focus to implement ideas as an independent single contributor, or as part of a team. I'd love to connect!
Perhaps the AI then figures out how to read/write the PCI bus or memory controller or whatever to leak just enough RF to speak Bluetooth to the next closest device to proxy through that?
There is also the giant "Tax Incentives" being given to these projects under the guise of them being "job creators". Unfortunately, data center's only need a bunch of jobs at the initial construction + installation of hardware. Once it's operational, it'd need about a dozen staff to maintain round-the-clock on premise supervision.
And in 2026, I don't think it's too big of a stretch to imagine that there are going to be people in power that can add + remove the metadata to whatever image they want, at will, to tell whatever story they want to create. Sadly.
There were similar fears about the webtrust CA system, but AFAIK there's no known incidents where a government strongarmed a CA into misissuing a MITM certificate, and then it was used in MITM attacks. The closest is some misissued certificates seemingly due to incompetence but weren't used in attacks.
The really interesting question is: What are we going to do when a technology so quickly and thoroughly displaces the need for human labor, in a society that constantly demands you trade your labor for the right to exist and participate in society?
I think capital will always be looking for better returns, and as long as human beings can add marginal value somewhere in that equation, there will be demand for human labor.
Working in tech has taught me to stay vigilant. I've seen the cycles and seen people survive each one. Perhaps that's why I feel better prepared for this. Anyone whose job primarily consists of manipulating bits should probably assume that significant parts of it are going to be automated.
Where I disagree is the assumption that we're approaching some kind of escape velocity where automation eliminates useful human labor faster than people can adapt. People need to eat, firms want to make money, and both create enormous pressure to find the next place where human effort has value.
That doesn't mean the transition will be painless, or that everyone displaced will successfully pivot. But there's a very large leap between "AI destroys a lot of existing jobs" and "human labor no longer has economic value." I don't think we've demonstrated the latter.
I said in another comment. It is not the labor that is being destroyed. It is the destruction of art, of good taste, originality, beauty etc etc. Everything that humans derive joy from, that is being replaced by repetitions of past self. It is the revenge of the LCD of humanity. It will win, and will go insane shortly due lack of real happiness...It is not something that LLMs started or enabled, it is just a catalyst. Much like internet, but a lot worse...
It's also very representative of the HN comment section vibes overall.
But such is normal with normies providing startup critiques, if you just look at every announcement and say "this will fail", you'd be right 99% of the time.
I mean, the AI skepticism is still so prevalent today in HN, despite it solving decades old math problems, hacking into companies, making software engineer no longer code, etc. (all this just in the last year).
So nothing really has changed in this community's vibes.
If you think HN is anti-AI, you are in deep. There isn't many places on the internet (sans X/Twit which i don't check) that is as AI-positive as HN. Sure, holdouts remain but the frontpage has a 60% constant vibecoded project submission.
You are mixing supporting AI (which HN is mostly against, but more supportive than other places), and thinking AI is dumb, which HN has been pretty persistent on for years.
Do you take full credit for the output of the LLM ? If you accept the rewards for what you do with the LLM's output, it's probably ethical that you also take on the risks.
That's only true if the risks are reasonable, understood, and expected. Driving a car is risky, but if someone sells you a car that goes flying into incoming traffic because of a flaw in the design the car company is to blame. "Drivers know cars are dangerous and risky" isn't acceptable.
It describes in part how some volunteer brain scans are actually quite agreeable to work with until they work for too many hours, and then they get fussy, but it's cool, you can always reboot them. But you need to hide from them the fact that it's been decades since they were scanned and uploaded, or they'll realize how long they've been slaves for.
For every episode except the last 1-2 the characters are not textually aware that they're simulated humans made from a brain scan, and the conflict and plot are largely interpersonal conflict and being forced into adventures by the mad AI that runs the simulation. The characters wish that they could leave and/or change the simulation, and eventually accept their situation, and part of the conclusion is the idea that it's worth existing in their limited simulation and trying to make the best of it even though they'll never leave.
You could say it's exploring what it would be like to be trapped in a simulation with a mad AI, but I wouldn't say it explores the concept of ethics of simulating humans in general. Most of the things the humans don't like are arbitrary limitations of this simulation in particular (can't talk to the outside world, can't choose your form, can't have sex, can't have any impact on the world, forced into zany situations by an AI that doesn't really understand humans or listen to them), not anything about simulations in general. The finale touches on the idea of the simulated humans wondering about their original versions and what they're like and what they're up to, but that's about it.
Basically, I don't feel by watching the show I encountered any non-trivial ideas about human simulations just because it's about a simulation.
The ideal "World Wide Web" envisioned by it's original design, was that a URI was a durable pointer to an immutable piece of information.
In 2026, we now know that the information can be edited, or completely removed for many reasons, some legitimate, and some nefarious.
Taking a screenshot is the easiest way to ensure the original is kept for folks to see. Frankly, it'd be even better if (a) the app can signal to the OS information about the url to the page for the screenshot, (b) timestamps were captured in the image and not cropped, and (c) the OS can authenticate the screen shot and digitally sign that it came from an unaltered device.
